The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is extremely well equipped for contemporary molecular biology, genetics, cellular, and bioinformatics research, and this is supplemented by conveniently located shared instrument facilities containing major equipment items. Molecular Genetics Lab staff and students also have access to an office area with networked computers and wireless internet, as well as state-of -the-art kettle, toaster, fridge, microwave and sink!


The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is a purpose-built Physical Containment Level 2 research facility with integrated equipment rooms. Major items of equipment housed in the lab include:

Constant Temperature Rooms & A12 Molecular Analysis Facility

Storage and growth facilities consist of self-contained 4ûC and 37ûC rooms located adjacent to the lab.

The cold room contains:

  • Ratek rotary tube mixer

The warm room contains:

  • New Brunswick Scientific gyratory shaker

We are also major users of the A12 Molecular Analysis Facility that is also located adjacent to the Molecular Genetics Lab, which contains the following instruments:

A12 Microscopy Facility

We also make extensive use of the A12 Microscopy Facility for our cell biology analyses, which include immunofluorescence microscopy (IFM) and Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) fusion studies.

The facility contains:

  • Zeiss Axiophot microscope with a Roper Scientific CoolSnap HQ high sensitivity CCD camera
  • Computer with MetaMorph software
