One Tree Island - General Boating Information

The Linckia II a new well-equipped 11 m vessel. This boat is ideal for work in and outside of the lagoon and around the Capricorn-Bunker Group of the GBRMP. It can be used for research projects involving overnight deployments.

One Tree Island has the following boats:

1x11m Aluminium boat Linckia II with twin 225 hp motors for work in and out of the lagoon and transfers between One Tree Island and Heron Island
1 x 5.9m aluminium pontoon boat Orcinus with twin 60hp motors for work in and out of the lagoon and transfers between One Tree Island and Heron Island
2 x 3.9m aluminium pontoon boats with either 25hp motor or 9.9hp motor - 'SeaStar/Sea Horse'
2 x 3.7m aluminium flat bottomed punts with 9.9hp motors

  • Punts and pontoon boats will be allocated to visitors on arrival at the Research Station.
    A recreational boat driver's licence is required for the use of all boats.
  • Bench fees include one 24lt fuel caddie.

First Aid

The island has a well equiped Royal Flying Doctor Medical Chest and access to the RFDS medical staff. However scientists are required to provide their own basic first aid needs.

You should bring: 'Aqua-ear' (To prevent 'Swimmer's Ear).
15+ Sunscreen.
Aspirin, or your preferred pain relief tablet.
Aloe vera gel or Calamine lotion for sunburn.
Band-aids.
Personal insecticide.

Weather Conditions

Details of temperature, humidity, rainfall, lagoon temperature etc are available on request. Visitors should bring wet weather gear as well as some warm clothing at all times of the year.

The Station Manager has the final say as to whether boating or diving activities are possible in rough weather.
