Current Research

The dramatic decline of Australia's small mammals has been well documented over the past few years. In western NSW a reintroduction program, into a 4,000 ha predator proof area, at Scotia Sanctuary has commenced in an attempt to recover some of the small mammals listed as extinct in NSW. The Sanctuary is owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) and this project represents the first stage of a collaborative research program between the University of Sydney, AWC, and the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC).

My research will focus on the reintroduction ecology of four species; the greater bilby, the bridled nailtail wallaby, the brush-tailed bettong and the burrowing bettong. Areas of interest include post-release dispersal, diet, habitat impact and population dynamics of the reintroduced population.

Research interest

My general interests are in the management and conservation of endangered species. Before commencing my current project on mammal recovery in western NSW, I was involved in various aspects of wombat biology including captive breeding and assisted breeding (cross fostering and superovulation) and behaviour (home range, burrow use and activity patterns). I have also been involved with studies into the effect of habitat fragmentation on populations of agile antechinus in NSW and the monitoring of reintroduced burrowing bettongs at the Arid Recovery Reserved in Roxby Downs, SA.
