Dr Peter George Simpson has made an outstanding contribution to chemistry education for over forty years. Some highlights include:
- Three books on chemistry and chemistry teaching,
- The coordinator of the Schools WA Chemistry Olympiad Program (1992-2001),
- A member of the examining panels (including chief examiner) of the Tertiary Entrance Examination (or its equivalents) in both NSW and WA,
- A member of the syllabus committees for the Tertiary Entrance Examination (or its equivalents) in both NSW and WA,
- A winner of an "Excellence in Teaching Award" from the Faculty of Science at the University of Western Australia and
- The 2000 Bayliss Youth Lecturer (with Mark Ellison).
Peter's enthusiasm for chemistry education has rubbed off on others who have worked with him. He is widely regarded as an outstanding teacher among secondary school teachers and university lecturers.
Peter Simpson is a consultant for Hammersley Iron in Science Education based in the Department of Chemistry in UWA. His interest in Chemistry Education, particularly at the transition stage from schools to university, led him to write books for improved teaching of Chemistry in schools. Peter received the Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching Award in 1996. These awards represent a joint effort by the Guild and the University to recognise and reward exemplary teaching.
