THE CHEMISTRY FOUNDATION

The Chemistry Foundation supports the School of Chemistry to promote interest in chemistry and to broaden knowledge and understanding about chemistry and its importance to modern society. The Foundation aims to:

  • Inspire secondary school students to pursue careers in science, particularly chemistry.
  • Support the activities of the school through funding and sponsorship of distinguished visiting fellows from major universities worldwide in order to enrich the study of chemistry and the School's research programs.
  • Promote seminars, courses and workshops in chemistry and to encourage industry involvement in them.
  • Provide the main avenue to industry liaison and engagement with companies and government organisations who depend on a strong stream of highly qualified chemistry graduates. This is achieved through a programme of events that showcases the extremely strong research programme within the School.
  • Actively encourage donations and bequests from alumni and friends of the School.

The Chemistry Foundation overseas the administration of four trust funds that support specific activities within the School. These are:

  • The Cornforth Fund for Chemistry – this fund was established to honour the Nobel Prize winner Sir John Cornforth and supports the short-term appointment of prominent international researchers to undertake research and teaching at the school in the field organic chemistry.
  • The Hush Fellowship Fund – this fund was established by Professor Noel hush AO to provide prizes and encouragement for students in theoretical chemistry and to bring distinguished overseas chemists to lecture and to enhance teaching and research.
  • The Michael Bishop Award in Chemistry Fund – this fund was established to encourage talented secondary school students to be involved in research projects within the School of Chemistry.
