How to book a seminar

School seminars (Fridays)

As of 1 March 2018 weekly school seminars will be held on Fridays only at 11:00 am. To organize a Friday seminar you will need to:

  • Check the seminar page for availability, then email the seminar coordinators listed at the top of the page as well as Anna Renfrew and Anne Woods with details of speaker, institution and proposed date. If your speaker requires travel and accommodation please contact Anna Renfrew.
  • Anne Woods will contact the speaker for their abstract a week or so before the talk so that it can be advertised properly in the Chemistry Weekly Digest which is distributed to the School on Mondays. However, if you have a copy of the abstract please forward it to Anne.
  • Duties of the host: We suggest that your organize a “schedule” (schedule template) for visiting speakers who are meeting with our academic team - a “thank you” gift (note book) and water for the speakers will be available from Sue O’Brien in room 209C. If your speaker would also like to give a talk at UNSW (their seminars are on Thursday), the seminar coordinators can organize this for you. The cost will be split between USYD and UNSW.
  • Catering: If you are hosting a Friday seminar and you wish to request a light lunch of sandwiches and juice for students, please give final numbers to Anna Renfrew and Anne Woods no later than the Wednesday morning before the luncheon. Seminar lunches will be held in the School's tea room located on level 1 from 12:00 pm to 1:10 pm or if it’s a nice day you may prefer to go outside in the courtyard. Anne and Anna will deliver the food and drink to the level 1 tea room.

NB: Seminar speakers usually give a lecture between 45-50 minutes with the remaining time for questions.

Early career researcher seminars (first Wednesday of each month)

The first Wednesday of each month 11:00 am seminar session has been set aside for postdoctoral and other early career researchers to present their research to the school. This will be a chance to increase the visibility of the postdocs in the school and of course learn about chemistry. Research presented will range from PhD work, previous postdoc work or current research being undertaken within the school, depending on the desire of the presenter.

The host for each month will be the previous months presenter so please check seminar page.

Anne Woods will contact the speaker for their abstract a week or so before the talk so that it can be advertised properly in the Chemistry Weekly Digest which is distributed to the School on Mondays. However, if you have a copy of the abstract please forward it to Anne.

Special seminars

You will need to:

  • Check the seminar page for availability, bearing in mind that the School seminars (Fridays at 11:00am) and Postgraduate seminars (Mondays at 4:00 pm) are permanently booked. If you want to schedule a special seminar on Monday at 4:00 pm please speak to the seminar coordinators first. Once you have chosen a date and time please email details (including preferred venue; date, time, name of speaker and institution) to seminar coordinators listed at the top of the page as well as Anna Renfrew and Anne Woods.

Please note that Anne has to book a lecture theatre/room so it is important to notify her of any proposed special seminars - do not assume that a chemistry LT is available.

Postgraduate seminars (Mondays)

Check for availability of Mondays then advise your supervisor; seminar coordinators which are listed at the top of this page, as well as and of the date.

Anne Woods will contact you for your abstract a week or so before your talk so that it can be advertised properly in Chemistry Weekly Digest that is emailed to the School on Mondays. Postgraduate seminars are held on Mondays from 4:00 pm.

Catering: The Research Administration team will buy the food and drink for the "after seminar get together" at 5:00 pm. However, it will be up to the host to nominate a student to pick up the food and drink and set it up outside LT2 before the lecture commences at 4:00 pm. Either Anne Woods or Anna Renfrew will email the host asking them to nominate a student to look after this task and what they need to do on the day.

Sydney University Chemical Society seminars

Check for availability and then advise seminar coordinators listed at the top of the page as well as Anna Renfrew and Anne Woods with details of speaker, institution and proposed date. If your speaker requires travel and accommodation please contact Anna Renfrew. Please send abstract to Anne Woods a week before the event so it can be advertised properly. SUCS seminars are traditionally held at 5:30-6:30pm with refreshments from 5:00 outside the nominated LT which is usually LT2 or LT4. Please note that the SUCS student council members organize the catering for ALL SUCS events - the SUCS Honorary Secretary to advise them about this.
