Raman/SEM Combined Analysis

A Structural Chemical Analyser (SCA) is an interface fitted to the column of an FEI Quanta Scanning Electron Microscope. This interface unites the SEM and Raman spectrometer to allow morphological, elemental, chemical, physical, and electronic analysis from the same region of a sample in the SEM chamber. A fibre–optic cable delivers the incident laser light to the SCA where it is then directed along a retractable tube which contains the collection optics. This optical transfer tube is inserted into the SEM vacuum chamber and sits between the objective lens and the sample. A video system and white light illumination unit housed within the interface are used to locate the area of the sample to be analysed. The Raman scattered light is then returned via fibre–optic cable to the spectrometer for detection.

The Renishaw inVia Raman microscope and the FEI Quanta SEM were acquired in 2006 thanks to an ARC LIEF grant. The instruments are both located in the Electron Microscopy Unit, The University of Sydney. To use the combined system you will need to be trained on both instruments. Further information about the SEM, associated charges and the Electron Microscopy Unit can be found at www.emu.usyd.edu.au.
