2013 chemistry bridging course
PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
In February each year the School of Chemistry conducts a bridging course, Preliminary Chemistry, which is designed to suit the needs of students who have not completed high school courses in chemistry or who have a weak background in the subject. The course covers the basic chemistry needed by such students who are entering a faculty that requires the study of chemistry in the first year.
The seven day course will be held in the first half of February 2013 at dates to be determined. Registration will be open early in January and is completed online. The cost will be $310.
The course is primarily intended for students who are enrolling in courses at the University of Sydney but students from other institutions may be admitted if there is sufficient space available.
Students who are enrolling at the Cumberland College campus should attend the bridging course provided by that institution.
The course consists of 14 sessions spread over 7 days, each session starting with a lecture and followed by a 2 hour small group tutorial.
The course notes are available on-line so that intending students can prepare in advance. In particular, the first few topics of the Bridging Course require a lot of rote learning because a sound knowledge of chemical nomenclature and formulas is the first essential to later topics involving, for example, chemical calculations. Spending some time on at least the first few topics well beforehand will be of considerable benefit to students at the start of the course. The cost includes a full set of notes, small group tutoring and a memory stick containing all the support material including videos of the lectures.

EXTERNAL COURSE
The same course may be taken externally by a limited number of students during 2012. The course content is identical to that held in February but tutorial help when needed will be supplied via email by a tutor.
Students will receive a hard copy of the notes and a memory stick with videos of the lectures as well as all the material currently on-line.
The course will cost $200.
