2015 chemistry bridging courses

The School of Chemistry offers a bridging course, “Preliminary Chemistry”, designed to prepare students entering a first year university course but who have not previously studied chemistry. The course is also available to anyone who has an interest in learning some basic chemistry. Preliminary Chemistry is offered as a “live” course held in early February each year (Preliminary Chemistry (Standard)) and also as an external version (Preliminary Chemistry (External)) which can be undertaken at anytime of the year and which has no particular starting date or completion time limit.

Preliminary Chemistry (Standard)

The course is designed for students who have not completed HSC Chemistry or who have a weak background in the subject and who are enrolling in a Faculty for which knowledge of Chemistry is needed. It is suitable for students entering any of the first year chemistry courses at the main campus at the University of Sydney. The seven day course consists of two lectures each of one hour duration and two tutorial sessions each of two hours duration each day. Tutorials are organised in small groups of about 10 students each.

The course notes and resource materials are available on-line so that intending students can prepare in advance. The cost of the course includes a hard copy of notes, small group tutoring and a memory stick containing all the support material including videos of the lectures and an interactive copy of the notes.

For further information please contact Dr Don Radford or A/Prof. Adam Bridgeman at chemistry.bridgingcourse@sydney.edu.au.

DATES: Early February 2015 (week days).
COST: To be determined.
ENROLLING DETAILS: January 2015

Preliminary Chemistry (External)

This course is the same as Preliminary Chemistry (Standard) except that is taken by external study and the tutorial help is provided by email from the tutors. It can be undertaken at any time throughout the year and suits students wanting to enter university mid-year or who cannot attend the February session.
COST: The fee of $200 includes all the materials and as much tutorial help by email as required. For more details, email to Don Radford or Adrian George at chemistry.bctutor@sydney.edu.au.

Preliminary Chemistry FHS (External only)

This course has been developed from the standard course above with modifications to suit students who are attending Cumberland College courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences and whose course requires a prior knowledge of chemistry. Those courses are

  • BAppSci (Exercise and Sport Science)
  • BAppSci (Exercise Physiology)
  • BAppSci (Physiotherapy)
  • BHealthSci for students intending to take Movement Science as a second major.

More information about presumed knowledge can be obtained from the Faculty of Health Sciences, email fhs.studentcentral@sydney.edu.au.

Preliminary Chemistry FHS is available externally only and can be started at any time.

Note that students enrolled at Cumberland College in BAppSci (Exercise and Sport Science)/Master of Nutrition and Dietetics study chemistry at the main campus and take either CHEM1001 or CHEM1101. Such students who need to undertake a bridging course should enrol in either Preliminary Chemistry (Standard) or Preliminary Chemistry (External) and not Preliminary Chemistry FHS. Preliminary Chemistry FHS is not suitable for students who are to study any first year chemistry course at the main campus.

COST: The fee of $200 includes all the materials and as much tutorial help by email as required. For more details, email to Don Radford or Adrian George at chemistry.bctutor@sydney.edu.au.
