What is it?

The Faculty of Science introduced the Science Students’ Transition Workshop in 1997 to provide commencing students with an opportunity to meet other students in a fun and relaxed environment before they commence their studies. Since 1997, incoming students have enjoyed this great day, meeting other commencing students while discovering all they need to know before semester begins.

The 2012 Transition Workshop will be hosted on Saturday 25 February, 2012 at Sydney University.

Who is it for?

The Science Student Transition Workshop has two separate programs:
A workshop for commencing Science Students and a shorter afternoon session for their Parents.

Why attend?

This one-day workshop is an excellent way to help you feel prepared and also gives you the opportunity to chat with current students and staff in the Faculty of Science before you launch into your studies.

Best of all, you choose your group for the day, ensuring that you meet other first year students with similar interests at the Transition Workshop. So, as soon as you start your degree you will see familiar faces around campus and may even see friends you have met at the workshop in your laboratory sessions and/or tutorials!

What does it cost?

The Science Students’ Transition Workshop has a fee of $10 per student (the parents' session is free).

  • morning tea
  • lunch
  • a range of snacks throughout the day

Parents receive afternoon tea.

The Student Program

Details about the activities in the Student Program will become available in February 2012.

Parent Program

The Parents' Program is a vital part of the Science Students' Transition Workshop. We invite parents and guardians of our new students to visit the campus so that they can support you in your transition to university and participate in this university experience.

More details about the Parent Program will become available in February 2012.

What we know about student transition

Starting uni is really exciting, but it is also a time of enormous change - social, academic and personal. Regardless of whether you are coming from Sydney, interstate or overseas, putting time into meeting more people here on campus will be of enormous benefit to you throughout your studies. As a commencing student, this support will enable you to acclimatise to the model of tertiary education and independent enquiry expected of all students at the University of Sydney.

The Faculty of Science is a very large community and can seem overwhelming at first, when you are finding your way around. The best way to feel a part of things here is to take every opportunity to make new friends and get involved in University life, both within and outside of class.

The Transition Program is a great way to do this, as is joining clubs and societies.

When you begin Uni: meet senior students

One of the best features of the Transition Workshop is the presence of senior students who can answer all manner of questions and point you in the right direction. These knowledgeable senior students are also available during your first weeks of university at SLAM lunches (Science Link-up And Mentoring lunches). To set yourself up for your studies, you should definitely come along to and enjoy a free lunch!

Registrations open in O-Week, for more information visit the SLAM website.
