Carling is currently working as a Research Dietitian in the Allergy Clinic at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Carling has a love of science that she applies to many other aspects of her life; such as her Heston Blumenthal-type approach to a much-loved hobby - cooking. She gets to experiment not only in the lab but in the kitchen as well!
Carling on the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics: "I didn't realise we were going to be lectured by so many prominent leaders in the field of dietetics. Many of ours lecturers are the ones who are making breakthrough discoveries and the ones we see and hear in the emdia so you really are being taught by the best."
How did you get to where you are now?
I have always been interested in science but I was originally unsure about which direction to take, or my career prospects. The Bachelor of Science degree was the perfect starting point as it allowed me to explore many options. I was able to dabble in different areas such as marine biology and geographical science, and later realised that it was the immunology and biochemistry areas that really interested me. The strong component of biochemistry in the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics was attractive to me, as was the opportunity to work in the health system.
I worked as a swimming teacher during my undergraduate degree and really enjoyed the teaching / training aspect. By combining my love of science, health and training, I now have the perfect job of providing nutritional advice and guidance, whilst still continuing with research and data collection.
What did you enjoy most about studying the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics?
I really enjoyed the placement semester of the course and the opportunity to put what I had learnt into practice. I worked at Ryde and Canterbury hospitals carrying out nutritional assessments on patients. I love helping people, so being ale to work with health professionals who provide nutritional guidance was a real highlight.
Another highlight was the research component of the course. I carried out an animal-based study on sugar-sweetened beverages and exercise. We gave sugar-sweetened water at the same concentration as soft drink to the rats and then had half of them carry out exercise on a treadmill. The aim of the project was to see whether exercise can prevent some of the detrimental effects of soft drink. We submitted a paper which is currently under review so it will be really exciting if it gets published.
Was the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics what you expected?
