INTRODUCTION: Background 1
In a summary or short report, you are not required to write a full introduction; in fact there is usually not enough room to do so within the word limit of the assignment. Sometimes you do not need to include the title 'Introduction'. All you need to introduce is the background theory which you will refer to later in your discussion (about 1-2 sentences) and a brief description of the purpose of the study (about one sentence). Three to eight lines is normally enough. Remember that introductions vary according to the experiment you are doing, so always be guided by the particular instructions your lecturers give you.
