Student Prizes

One of the core purposes of the Sydney Protein Group is to provide opportunities for postgraduate students working in the field of protein science to attend high quality scientific meetings, at which they will be able to hear recent research results from a range of areas, interact with other researchers, and present their own work to a wide audience.

The SPG offers several prizes of this type.

  • The Thompson Prize, named the eminent local protein scientist, E.O.P. (Ted) Thompson, was inaugurated in 1992 and is awarded for the best presentation by a young local scientist in the field of protein structure and function. Please see here for the 2012 event held last year.
  • Two prizes that allow the recipient to attend the Lorne Protein Conference in the following year. One of these prizes were sponsored by ATA Scientific. These prizes were announced on the Thompson evening.
  • In 1999, a third prize was added, to be sponsored by the SPG. The Greg Ralston Memorial Prize is to be awarded to a BSc. (Hons) student who intends to continue on to a PhD program in the following year. The prize allows the student to attend the Lorne Protein Conference. This prize was announced on the Thompson evening.
