Poster Printer Guide

What follows are instructions for setting up your computer to be able to printer to the SMB Poster Printer.

Please note that EVERYTHING to do with the poster printer is EXPENSIVE.

Please only print your poster if you’re absolutely SURE that it’s correct, and make sure that you run the paper completely out before replacing the roll.

Instructions for PC computers

Step 1) Obtain the correct driver for your operating system:

In the drop down boxes, select your operating system as well as the version and a number of new drop downs will appear. Click the 'Drivers' drop down and click on the driver file to download it. The file name will be something like:

But it may be slightly different depending on the version and your operating system.

Step 2) Install the driver

1) Download, unzip and/or run the appropriate for your operating system.
2) When prompted for printer location, select “Manually Set Port to Install”
3) Rename the printer to “Poster” then select “Add Port…”
4) Then choose “Standard TCP/IP Port”
5) Enter 172.16.130.28 into the top line > Start > Yes to install the printer

Step 3) Printing Method

1) Open your poster file (eg in powerpoint), select file > print > select the poster printer

2) Check that the printer properties are as follows:

Main Tab: set Media Type to ‘Coated paper’ and Print Target to ‘Poster (Graphic Image)’
Page Setup Tab: set Page Size: Custom (the size of your poster in mm), Choose Portrait or Landscape, Media Source: Roll Paper and Roll Paper Width: 36-inch (~91cm)
Leave everything else at default settings > click okay

3) Also check that “Colour”, “Slides” and “Scale to fit paper” are selected.

4) If the error message “your slides exceed the printable area of the paper” occurs, press “scale and print” and continue printing

5) Go to the printer (level 5 ‘balcony’) check that the printer is on-line & printing okay.

6) Press the green button to any error message about low toner

7) Once the poster has printed & dried you may want to laminate it:
a. Check it is plugged in.
b. Set temperature to 130 degrees and motor speed to 1.5
c. Wait approx. 5-10 min, until set temperature is reached (red light will go off)
d. Change the switch position from “off” to “forward” Carefully feed through the off green sheet of plastic to test that everything is okay. Cut the bit of plastic off.
e. Carefully align your poster and feed into the rollers.
f. Once poster has run through completely, change switch back to off positon. Cut the poster off using the yellow stanly knife
g. Switch off heater by unplugging or setting thermostat to ‘0’
h. The poster can be trimmed with the guillotine in the room.

Instructions for Apple Mac Computers

Step 1) Obtain the correct driver for your operating system:

You can determine your operating system version by clicking the apple icon on the top left of you screen and then click "About This Mac"

In the drop down boxes, select your operating system as well as the version and a number of new drop downs will appear. Click the 'Drivers' drop down and click on the driver file to download it. The file name will be something like:

But it may be slightly different depending on the version and your operating system.


Step 2) Install the driver

1) Launch the installer, authenticate yourself and proceed through the licencing information.
2) Click through all the prompts with Next
3) Register the printer with the following information:
Printer Name: Canon W8400PG (432EBA)
Location: Level 5 Landing
Model: W8400PG
Connection Method: Bonjour

Step 3) Printing Method

1) Grab the pulldown menu that shows the name of the program you’re currently using, and set it to Main

2) Select Paper Type: Heavyweight Coated Paper

3) Choose Poster (Graphic Image)

4) Pulldown the menu again to Page Setup

5) Tick "Enlarged/Reduced Printing,"

6) Select 36"x48" (ARCH E)

7) If you go to collect your poster, and the printer says something like "change black ink type," then please GENTLY press the Menu/Online button on the printer. The error message should go away and it'll start printing.
