Applied Molecular Biotechnology

Course Information

These course outlines are a guide only. They are provided for the information of prospective students. Although every effort is made to ensure the most up to date information is provided, timetables often change each semester due to the availability of rooms and resources. Content (including lecture/practical topics, assessment and textbooks) is also regularly reviewed to ensure relevance and effective learning.

Unit of Study Overview

This unit of study provides students with the opportunity to undertake hands-on research experience undertaking a biotechnology-related project in industry or at a national laboratory, hospital or university research laboratory. Entry to a research placement is limited by a quota and the availability of facilities and projects. The placement will involve 75 contact hours on a part-time basis. Students who do not undertake a placement will be assigned a case study project to examine in depth a biotechnology company including its products and services, competitors and sustainability. Results obtained in MOBT510X units of study undertaken in the preceding semester (in theory and practical components) may decide whether students are assigned to placements or case study projects. Assessment is based on a student's performance in their placement or case study project, a report and presentation.
