Course Information
These course outlines are a guide only. They are provided for the information of prospective students. Although every effort is made to ensure the most up to date information is provided, timetables often change each semester due to the availability of rooms and resources. Content (including lecture/practical topics, assessment and textbooks) is also regularly reviewed to ensure relevance and effective learning.
Unit of Study Overview
The broad objectives involve learning the role of nutrition in all aspects of disease from aetiology to medical nutrition therapy. The importance of client-focused factors in dietary modification, education and interpretation of theory for client understanding, are key discussion points.
This Unit of Study involves the study of medicine as it relates to nutrition, and the modification of diet and nutrition support of patients with different illnesses. It includes lectures by medical specialists and specialist dietitians as well as a paediatrics program at the Children's Hospital Westmead.
An extension to the lecture and tutorial series are the Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Workshops and a group case study. The MNT Workshop is a regular interactive and group-based workshop, allowing students to apply what they have learned in their clinical lectures and dietary communication and counselling sessions from semesters 1 and 2. The case study task has been designed to challenge and enhance students’ interpretation and critical evaluation skills for a particular patient case/diagnosis, relating to the ‘Nutrition Care Process’.
