Sun protection:

  • High SPF sun screen (>30+, water resistant)

  • Sun-protective clothing (long-sleeved shirt, rash-vest, etc)

Suitable clothing and footwear for reef walking:

  • Fully enclosed sturdy shoes or dive boots
  • Long pants/shirt or stinger suit
  • Raincoat

Small backpack for when out on the reef. If you intend to carry cameras or fragile items, ensure that you have a waterproof bag/backpack.


  • Snorkel
  • Mask
  • Fins
  • Wetsuit
  • BCD, Regulators, Wetsuit, etc. (Weight belts, weights, and tanks provided)
    NB: A limited number of BCD’s, Regs, wetsuits, masks, snorkels and fins may be hired at OTIRS


  • Sea-sickness tablets (if required)
  • Other personal medical requirements
  • Insect repellant
  • AquaEar if needed

Some warm clothing for the evening, especially in the winter.


  • Top and bottom sheets set and pillow slips (mattresses, pillow and blankets provided)
  • Water bottle (preferably 1L)
  • Towels, soap, toiletries


  • Australian recreational boat license (if applicable)
  • Copies of permits, dive plan and risk assessments


  • Warm clothing for the evening, especially in the winter (April through Sept)
  • Torch (spare batteries)
  • Camera (charger)
  • All of your scientific requirements (unless prearranged with Station Managers)
  • Laptop computer
