The Workshops

Agriculture

Agriculture workshop

Through a mix of plenary lectures and interactive activities by our professional academic staff, the Agriculture Teachers Workshop provides in depth information about the HSC Agriculture Electives. This single day workshop targets individual syllabus points using relevant and current examples.

Tours of the faculty’s research facilities and University’s grounds as well as a special seminar on teaching methods further compliment this event. Finally, during the catered lunch you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to our lovely staff and students.

Biological Sciences

Biology workshop

How we manage our environment will arguably determine Australia’s economic future. Ensuring ecologically sustainable practices is one of the greatest challenges facing our society. To meet these challenges, there is a national and international demand for well-trained scientists with a thorough understanding of the physical, chemical and biological interactions in the environment. This one-day program, offered by the School of Biological Sciences will give teachers access to a range of expertise in key areas of the HSC biology syllabus. You will have the opportunity to hear from leading researchers and learn about the latest emerging research in biological and environmental disciplines.

Chemistry

Chemistry workshop

Chemistry is truly the “central science”. It is science at the molecular scale - it is at the molecular level where major advances are being made in areas as diverse as medicine, drugs, nanotechnology, new materials, and the environment.

As participants in the chemistry workshop you will get the opportunity to learn about many spectroscopic techniques. You will be able to do your own analysis using Fluorimetry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry, Mass Spectrometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography as well as see the wonderful results observed using an Electron Microscope. Many of the techniques needed to fully understand the various optional topics of the syllabus in years 11 and 12 will also be discussed, so bring along your many questions for us to solve.

We will be taking you on a tour of the research facilities in the school and you will get to meet the wonderful staff and students of the School of Chemistry. A lovely lunch and morning and afternoon tea will be served and this will give a great opportunity to talk to staff and students. Two lectures each day on topical and interesting subjects will be given to spark your interest and to give an insight into the types of research we are involved in.

Physics

Physics workshop

The two-day Physics program includes plenary lectures featuring cutting edge research followed by a choice of workshops.

On registration participants will be asked to select four sessions (two each day). On the first afternoon there will be a “Meet-a-Physicist” session, followed by an informal dinner.

Workshop topics include old favourites like ‘Backyard Physics’, ‘Quanta to Quarks’, ‘Ideas to Implementation’ as well as new sessions on the National Curriculum, the International Baccalaureate, computer modelling and interactive lecture demos. The Nobel Lecture will be on Fibre Optics and the Workshop will conclude with the very popular talk on how physics can help you play better sport and solve a murder.

Registration

Online registration for the Science Teachers’ Workshop will be available soon. Upon completing your registration details, you will be able to either pay online with a credit card or print the tax invoice for your school to process.
