Biographical details

I completed a PhD in Physics in 2006 at the Optical Fibre Technology Centre (OFTC), The University of Sydney. I then commenced as a Research Fellow at the Optical Fibre Technology Centre from 2006, receiving a University of Sydney Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from 2007-2009. In 2009 I moved to the School of Physics as Senior Research Fellow, and was awarded an Australian Research Fellowship by the Australian Research Council for 2010-2014. I also joined the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS) when it was formed in 2009, and joined its Executive as Deputy Director since 2011. In 2014 I became an Associate Professor. I have published 1 book, 1 book chapter, 69 journal papers, and over 110 conference papers. I have also co-authored 37 invited talks at conferenes and workshops. Selected publications are listed below. These have received over 2650 citations with a h-index of 29 (Google Scholar, July 2014).

Research interests

My current research interests stem from my earlier work on microstructured polymer optical fibres, which we developed here at the University of Sydney. I have worked on the fabrication, design, modelling and application of these fibres, particularly on hollow-core fibres, fibre- and gratings-based sensors, understanding the guidance mechanisms, modelling, and short-range data transmission. I am now pursuing using them as a platform to enable resrearch in other areas.

In 2008 I begun investigating the application of polymer waveguides to the emerging field of THz radiation, being interested in dielectric-based hollow waveguides, flexible waveguides, and imaging probes for THz hyperspectral imaging.

In 2011 I began working on metamaterials, and in particular the use of drawing techniques to fabricate large volumes of metamaterials. Electric and magnetic metamaterials were fabricated using these methods. For the electric metamaterials, their properties could be tuned over two orders of magnitude in frequency, from the THz to the mid-IR, whilst the magnetic metamaterials operated at THz frequencies. These methods were used to demonstrate the first magnifying hyperlens for THz frequencies in 2013 that beat the diffraction limit for imaging and focusing by an order of magnitude.

My interests with the drawn metamaterials work now lie in utilising hyperlenses and imaging probes to perform super-resolved hyperspectral imaging across a wide frequency range, and applying that to biological and medical imaging. The spectral range I am interested in extends from the low THz to the mid-IR where many molecules of interest have spectral features relating to vibrations and conformations.

I have other current projects in related areas, such as short-distance communications, using the polymer-based fibre drawing techniques to fabricate medical and biomedical devices, and also projects in solar energy.
