Thesis title: Development of Metal-Based Anti-Cancer Drugs and Nanovesicle CarrierSystems for Intratumoral Injection

Thesis abstract:

There is a rapidly growing interest in the development of new metal anti-cancer drugs, based on the clinical success of cisplatin and its derivatives. However, the use of such drugs is considered problematic because of their typically low stability in biological media. We have recently discovered a highly cytotoxic vanadium complex that rapidly causes apoptosis in cultured cancer cells. This compound, and similar transition metal complexes can be highly active when injected directly into the tumour, but lose activity rapidly after release into the blood stream thus minimising systemic toxicity.
