Biographical details

I did my PhD in the Surface Physics group in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where I worked to create an atom-optical mirror to focus a beam of neutral helium atoms, forming the centrepiece of a scanning helium microscope, a novel device for surface analysis.

Research interests

My research focuses on surfaces and interfaces: where the exciting physics happens! I have worked in experimental physics in both industrial and academic contexts.

Industrially, my liquid-solid interface work at SC Johnson has resulted in numerous international patents and improvements in the Glade (R) line of plug-in air freshenersas well as the AllOut (R) Liquid Electric (R) line of insect control products common throughout the developing world.

Academically, my current research centres on plasma-solid interfaces: sputtering, thin film deposition, and surface nanostructuring. In particular, I am interested in high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). HiPIMS consists of short pulses of high-power plasma applied to a surface, thus effecting the benefits of high power while avoiding damage to the target. My work combines the theoretical with the experimental, and I have recently published a generalized mathematical model to calculate precisely the effects of plasma parameters on the time evolution of the target current, in plasma sputtering.
