Biographical details

During my undergraduate degree I took one year leave to work at the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory and performed research in designer steroid pharmacology analysis. I was subsequently employed as an analytical chemist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. During this time I gained extensive experience in mass spectrometry (MS). In 2008 I completed my B.Sc(Molecular Biotechnology and Biochemistry) (Hons) at the University of Sydney where I developed novel MS methods to characterise glycoproteins for which I received the University Medal. In 2013 I completed my PhD with A/Prof. Stuart Cordwell and Prof. Martin Larsen split between the University of Sydney and the University of Southern Denmark. During this time I was further trained in proteomics and developed several assays to quantify protein modifications. My training also included physiology and I applied the novel proteomic methods to study changes in signal transduction and metabolism during ischemia of the heart and brain. Over the course of my PhD I was the receipt of multiple awards most notably the European Proteomics Association (EuPA) young investigator of the year (2010) judged up to 3 years post PhD and the Royal Society of NSW Award (2011) in additional to several travel scholarships and prizes. During my PhD I was fortunate to attend several international conferences in Europe, USA and Australia with a number of oral presentations at world leading mass spectrometry conferences. This includes three selected oral presentations at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Conferences attracting up to 10,000 attendees and an invited oral presentation at Human Proteomics Organisation (HuPO).

In 2013 I was awarded an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship and begun a postdoctoral position with Prof. David James at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. I was also appointed as the manager of the Biological Mass Spectrometry Unit. I continued to develop MS assays, which were combined with a number of models of metabolic disease and insulin resistance. Working with Prof. David James and his research team enabled me to gain additional experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, cell biology and physiology. In 2014, I moved to the newly established Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. I was the primary consultant in the establishment of the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility where I established and currently maintain four state-of-the-art Orbitrap mass spectrometers. In 2015, I spent 6 months in Dr. Paul Gregorevic’s laboratory at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne. I gained experience in gene therapy techniques with a focus on the development of adeno-associated viruses for the transduction of mouse skeletal muscle and, a number of muscle physiology techniques. I am currently continuing my postdoctoral fellowship at the Charles Perkins Centre combining gene therapy and MS to study muscle biochemistry relating to exercise and metabolic disease.

Research interests

My research interests are related to how biological systems respond to stimuli / stresses / disease. I am particularly interested in the perturbation of dynamic protein-modifications and how they influence cellular function and survival. My goal is to combine various research tools to understand how protein-modifications influence human disease and how we can control such modifications to prevent and / or treat disease. I am working towards the eventual establishment of an independent research group with a focus on using novel systems biology techniques to understand core biological processes.
