Biographical details

Birgit Stiller received her M.Sc. degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, in 2008, as a Cusanuswerk scholarship recipient. Early 2012, she obtained her doctoral degree in Nonlinear Fiber Optics at the CNRS Research Institute FEMTO-ST, Besançon, France where she was working on Brillouin scattering in photonic crystal fibers and sensor applications. From October 2012 on, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany, in the quantum optics division of Prof. Gerd Leuchs. Birgit was awarded the Ohm Prize for her Master thesis on periodically poled Lithium Niobate for quasi phase-matching in 2009 and the A’Doc Prize for her PhD thesis in 2011.

Her research interests include nonlinear fiber optics, in particular Brillouin scattering and phase-sensitive amplifiers, optomechanics, nonlinear effects in photonic crystal fibers, fiber sensors, as well as quantum communication, specifically quantum key distribution and quantum hacking.

In June 2015, she joint CUDOS as a Research Fellow in the stimulated Brillouin scattering group.
