Associate Professor Brian Jones
School of Life and Environmental Sciences
Brian Jones is a molecular biologist with an interest in the developmental biology of food plants and wood production. He has a B.Sc in Horticulture from the UWSH, Sydney and a PhD from ENSAT, Toulouse, France. He has spent much of his career working in Europe on various projects related to developmental biology. He has active collaborations with groups in France, Portugal, Sweden and China and has published extensively on the role of hormones in plant development.
Brian is interested in how plants have adapted to changing environments. Understanding is key to our ability to efficiently adapt our systems and the plants we use to feed, clothe and house ourselves. Climate change and the burgeoning global population challenge us to rapidly improve our systems. Sustainable production systems are possible, but only if we work urgently and effectively.
Brian teaches undergraduate units in basic plant biology (AGEN1004, Applied Environmental Biology; PLNT3001, Plant, Cell and Environment; PLNT3002, Plant Growth and Development), and in horticulture (HORT4005, Research and Practice in Horticultural Science). He has a number of Honours and postgraduate students working to improve the productivity of food and tree crops through targeted molecular and genetic approaches.
