Thesis title: Conservation and management strategies for the freshwater turtles of the Murray River

Supervisors: Michael THOMPSON , James VAN DYKE

Thesis abstract:

The turtles living in the Murray River have been declining greatly in the last few decades. However, what will the wider ecological impact of these declines be, and what we can do about it, is not clear. This PhD project aims at (i) gathering evidence to assess the ecological role which these animals cover in their ecosystems, as well as (ii) gaining a deeper understanding of the causes of their declines, using alternative approaches such as citizen science. Finally, this project also aims at evaluating the feasibility of conservation strategies such as headstarting juvenile turtles.
