Biographical details

Damien's career began with completing Bachelor of Science majoring in soil science and a PhD concentrating on soil structure affected by cotton production. He was appointed as a Research Fellow for the Australian Cotton CRC working on analytical methods that were incorporated into the industry’s Decision Support Systems. He then took on the role of the Coordinator of Laboratory and Field Work teaching at the University of Sydney and then accepted the role of Associate Dean, Postgraduate Studies, in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. He was also seconded as the Academic Director eLearning for the Science, Business and Technology cluster to the DVC Education. While in this role Damien completed a Master of Education (Higher Education).

Currently he is appointed as Associate Professor in Global Soil Security and Soil Education, as well as, to the Executive Committee for the Sydney South East Asia Centre (SSEAC) as advisor on Postgraduate Training. He is the Commission Chair (4.4) for Soil Science Education and Public Awareness in the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), Chair of the Teaching Curriculum working Party (ASN-WG6) for the Australian Soil Network, the Deputy Chair for the Australian Examinations & Procedures Committee (APEC) and, is registered as Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS).

Research interests

I believe in integrating good science to solve the real-world problems challenging agriculture and the environment.

This is demonstrated by my research in three soil-related themes, being; what is the role of soil security in addressing some of the existential global sustainability challenges we are facing, how can models of the soil, including soil structure, be developed to assess the soil’s functionality, and fundamental questions, such as, how to assess the energy involved in soil aggregation affecting soil structure in agroecosystems. I am also passionate about education and believe that linking research with teaching along with community involvement can promote an environment where students can actively engage in ‘real-world’ problems.

My desire to integrate the community with my soil research has resulted in the emerging research program on Soil Security. This multi-dimensional soil concept is used here in the same sense that it is used widely for food and water. It has an integral part to play in the global environmental sustainability challenges of food security, water security, energy sustainability, climate stability, biodiversity, and human health.

I also have research programs based in Laos and Papua New Guinea (PNG) supported by ACIAR. For the Laos project I and the team have produced the first soil capability maps on a 100m grid for the northern provinces of Laos. The cocoa project in PNG is an example of developing strong links between scientifically supported soil knowledge with the needs of small holder cocoa producers.


I also have a strong interest in developing the Faculty’s teaching and learning curriculum, both for undergraduates and postgraduates. This has been supported by a number of small and large teaching grants, including Australian Learning and Teaching Council funding towards a National Curriculum I have also received industry grants from the GRDC to research approaches to enhance the capacity of soil knowledge with in-service training.

This research has resulted in collaborations with 5 of Australia’s leading Universities, and subsequent collaborations with Texas A&M in the USA and Universities in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

Teaching and supervision

Damien currently coordinates the undergraduate units; Professional Development (AFNR4001), Agroecosystems in Developing Countries (AFNR3001) and, Scientific Method and Communication (ENSY3001). He also coordinates the 4 research units of study in the Master of Agriculture and Environment Program, as well as, the Soil Processes, Assessment and Management (AFNR5511).

Damien contributes to curriculum more generally with the development and implementation of several units of study through to the overall course structure of the 5 degree streams and their majors within the Faculty of Science. Some of these curriculum developments have been acknowleged nationally through the Good Practice Guide: Threshold Learning Outcomes for Agriculture (page 52) and, his developments in field work teaching in South East Asia have been adopted as a model for inter-discipinary field schools.

He has co-supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate students' research in areas such as: soil structure and function, soil carbon dynamics and soil biology, the interface between applied soil physics and agronomy and land use rehabilitation, and archaeology. He also supervisors post-doctoral positions researching the future of industry relevant soil education and development agriculture
