Biographical details

David Fuentes was awarded a BSc (Hons) degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Western Sydney (1997). He obtained a PhD (2001) in analytical chemistry from the University of Western Sydney where he was doing research in the area of phytoremadiation, the use of plants to remove metals from contaminated soils. He did a short work stint in Alphapharm in Brisbane in 2001 doing pharmaceutical analysis and testing before taking the opportunity to work for the Australian Government Analytical Labs (now National Measurement Institute). In this role David gained experience in chemical analytical method development in various matrices including agrichemical, food, environmental and biological analysis. In 2004 he joined CSIRO where he worked as a Lab manager for the Organic and Isotope Geochemistry group in Sydney and carrying out research in the area of petroleum exploration, oil analysis and gas analysis. During his time at CSIRO, David gained extensive experience in laser pyrolysis, marine surveys and lab management.

David has experience with various types of chemical analysis methods (organic and inorganic), troubleshooting and maintenance of scientific instrumentation including high resolution GC-MS, LC-MS, lasers and UV.

David’s diverse science background and experience as well as his adaptability have allowed him to fit into various groups with scientists from very diverse backgrounds including chemistry, geology, microbiology, marine science and plant and animal metabolism. David is fully trained and qualified to work off shore on marine vessels and has taken part in various scientific marine surveys. As part of field sampling, he has had the opportunity to work underwater, on ships, underground mine sites, open mine sites and helicopters. In 2010 David worked for 2 months in the Gulf of Mexico during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, setting up a GC-MS laboratory on board a ship and monitoring hydrocarbon contamination of surface waters. David joined the University of Sydney in January 2015

I am interested in applying my knowledge of chemical method development and validation in the areas of plant and animal metabolites.
