Biographical details

Derek completed an undergraduate degree at UNSW (Geomorphology and Pedology) before starting work as Professor Collis-George's research assistant in the then Department of Soil Science (University of Sydney) in 1982, working in and managing the soil physics lab. While in this role he completed a Graduate Diploma (MACQ., Env. Stud.) before leaving in 1996 to become Principal Scientist at the National Centre for Groundwater Management (NCGM, UTS). His role at NCGM involved surface and groundwater modelling and the development of surface hydrology teaching programs. Derek returned to USYD in 2010, completing his PhD in agrometeorology in 2014. He is currently Senior Research Fellow on a GRDC funded project into innovative ways to develop soil science knowledge in the agriculture industry.

Research interests

My current interest derives from a perceived need for improved soil science knowledge in the grains industry (National Soil RD&E Strategy, GRDC). The challenge (initially) is to devise a system of in-service soil science training for advisors to the grains industry, which will also be suitable for incorporation into more traditional tertiary teaching models. I believe a "Scenario based learning" model is appropriate, where short workshops examine local issues from a constraint alleviation perspective.

Teaching and supervision

A trial, workshop involving undergraduate students has been completed and a series of workshops for agriculture industry professionals is planned for 2017.
