Biographical details

I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Edward Holmes. I completed my undergraduate studies in biology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where I also obtained a Masters degree in human biology and a PhD. During my thesis I focused on investigating key aspects of HIV-1 viral diversity within infected patients, especially the impact of minority variants on the development and transmission of antiviral resistance. During this time I also gained valuable expertise in a variety of other methods to study viruses, especially next-generation sequencing technologies, namely 454 pyrosequencing, Illumina, and Pacific Biosciences.

Research interests

My main research interest is understanding the mechanisms that underpin viral evolution and emergence, and which are central to the prevention and control of epidemics. To achieve these goals I utilise a combined genomic and phylogenetic approach.Since moving to Australia I have acquired important knowledge in phylogenetic techniques, and have expertise in using these to estimate key evolutionary parameters such as substitution rates, population dynamics and phylogeography.
