Biographical details

Dr Huang is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Carbon, Water and Food, Sydney Institute of Agriculture. His research mainly focuses on the use of various proximal and remote sensing technologies and spatial-temporal modelling algorithms for measuring, monitoring, mapping, forecasting and managing soil and water resources at different spatial and temporal scales.

Research interests

The rise and fall of civilisations have been closely related to the use and misuse of soil and water. Dr Huang has research interests in measuring, mapping, monitoring, forecasting and modelling soil water dynamics and transport of soil water and solutes at the field to catchment scales using various proximal and remote sensing technologies, pedometrics, and data assimilation approach. His research aims at improving the understanding the soil water dynamics at different spatial and temporal scales and providing the farmers, land users, and environmental consultants with the high-resolution maps of soil moisture dynamics for improved soil and water resources managements. Dr Huang is passionate about soil and water studies and his research can be divided into three main categories:

1. Digital soil mapping (DSM)

DrHuang is interested in digital soil mapping and particularly establishing empirical models between soil physical, chemical and hydrological properties and various proximally and remotely sensed ancillary data for mapping soil properties and management zones at various scales. The models will enable researchers to better account for the heterogeneity of soil in space and time, which is often overlooked in the past due to the labour-intensive and cost-prohibitive soil sampling and laboratory analysis and the time-consuming parameterization of complex soil physical models.

2. Proximal soil sensing (PSS)

DrHuang is also interested in various proximal soil sensing technologies (e.g. gamma-ray spectrometry, electromagnetic induction (EMI), visible near-infrared spectroscopy) and establishing mobile multi-sensor platforms for rapid sensing and mapping soil properties at the field to farms scales and particularly for precision agriculture. Dr Huang has expertise in the use of EMI and EM inversion algorithms for soil, hydrological and environmental studies.

3. Modelling transport of soil water and solutes

DrHuang is currently working on monitoring soil water dynamics using empirical models, mechanistic models, and data assimilation algorithms (e.g. ensemble Kalman filter) for nowcasting soil water dynamics in 2-D and 3-D at the farm scale. The research aims at improving the understanding and monitoring of soil water transport and helping farmers make better decisions for improving irrigation efficiency and crop yield.
