Biographical details

Jochen Schroder received his PhD from the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 2009. Since moving to Sydney, he worked in close collaboration with CUDOS industry partner Finisar on new and interesting applications of their spectral pulse-shaping based WaveShaper technology. From 2011 to 2013, Jochen was the Centre's Director for Training and Education. In addition to other smaller initiatives, he established the CUDOS Entrepreneurship Seminar series in collaboration with Dr Simon Poole, Director, New Business Ventures, Finisar Australia. Entrepreneurship Seminar Series aims to introduce and establish "entrepreneurial think" amongst CUDOS staff and students, ie the mindset behind transforming innovations into economic goods. Jochen acts as a reviewer for several journals including Optics Express, Optics Letters, Nature Communications, Photonics Technology Letters. He has been on the technical sub-committee of CLEO/PR and has co-organised the 'Will guided-wave parametric processing ever move out of the lab?' workshop at the same conference. Apart from research, Jochen is an amateur road cyclist and a keen Salsa and Rueda de Casino dancer.

Research interests

Member of the Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS). In 2012, Jochen was awarded an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) on 'Ultra-stable photonic-chip pulse-sources'. While working on this project he continues to contribute to many sub-projects of the Terabit per Second flagship project and has been appointed its Project Leader in 2013. He recently invented a novel method of addressing the LCoS inside the WaveShaper in order to create multi-output transfer functions. This turns the WaveShaper into an ultra-flexible optical circuit emulator to create interferometers, an optical discrete Fourier transform filter or other complex circuits. Together with Dr Liang Du and Dr Arthur Lowery at Monash University this device was used to create a reconfigurable optical OFDM multiplexer/demultiplexer which can be used to create very high bandwidth signals. These experiments were recently presented at the postdeadline session of OFC 2013 and the WaveShaper splitting technique is now integrated into Finisar's software. In some of his research highlights, Jochen demonstrated the first mode-locked Raman fibre laser at repetition rates above 1 GHz. He integrated a spectral pulse-shaper into a laser cavity, enabling the control of repetition rate, pulse-shape and wavelengths and demonstrated the first mode-locked laser that could be controlled to emit either dark or bright pulses. Jochen was also part of the team that demonstrated the first chip-based demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s communication signal.
