Biographical details

Jock graduated from The University of Sydney with an Honours (I) degree in Geology and Geophysics in 1971. He then completed a Ph. D. in Oceanography and Earth Sciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, California. This was followed by a postdoctoral position as Research Associate at the Universite de Paris and the Centre des Faibles Radioactivites (CNRS-CEA).

Jock returned to Australia in 1978 as a Lecturer in the Department of Geology, University of Melbourne. He moved to the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Sydney in 1983 where he became Head, 1996-1997. For six years from 1998 to 2003 Jock was Director of the International Ocean Drilling Program for Australia. Jock retired in 2004 and became an Honorary Associate Professor.

Research interests

Jock¿s main interest has involved mapping the sediments on the sea floor using multibeam sonar, sub-bottom seismic profiling and coring. The aim is to define the characteristics of sediments, the processes that deposited them, their age and their post-deposition diagenesis. Recent research expeditions have been onboard RV Southern Surveyor researching the continental slope offshore of NSW and Queensland. Jock is particularly interested in submarine landslides and their potential to cause tsunami.

Jock has been a Chief Scientist on numerous international research cruises and he helped to organise and raise funds for ¿The University of the Sea¿ training cruises for young scientists from Australia and developing nations in our region on the French oceanographic research vessel Marion Dufresne. Jock was also involved with CSIRO in training Indonesian scientists in a survey of submarine hydrothermal activity northern Sulawesi Seas onboard RV Baruna Jaya VIII.
