The University of Sydney

Biographical details

Professor Jonathan Aitchison is currently the Head of Geosciences and Edgeworth David Chair. Jonathan is originally from New Zealand and began life on a plate boundary where the rocks he loves are generated.

He did his BSc Hons and MSc at the University of Otago then headed to Japan for a term as a Monbusho Scholar. After a PhD on convergent plate margin rocks in the New England Region at UNE, he returned to Japan to work on his post doc.

Professor Aitchison’s first stint at University of Sydney in 1990 lasted 5 years in the Department of Earth Sciences. He then moved to the University of Hong Kong where he led the HKU Tibet Research Group and was Head of the Deaprtment of Earth Sciences from 2003 through 2009.

Research interests

Professor Aitchison's research interests include: tectonics, collision zones especially those involving intra-oceanic island arcs and ophiolites, subduction initiation, the India-Asia collision and the geological evolution of Tibet and the Himalaya, the Yarlung Tsangpo, Indus, Bangong-Nujiang and Shyok suture zones, radiolarian biostratigraphy, the evolution of life on Earth and extremophile organisms, the tectonic evolution of East Asia and the tectonic evolution of eastern Australia through the Phanerozoic.
