Biographical details

Dr Bryant received her PhD in astrophysics from the University of Sydney in 2001 with a thesis titled "The nuclear environment of radio galaxy hosts". She has since held research positions in the University of Sydney in areas of high redshift radio galaxies, galaxy evolution and astrophotonic developments for astronomical instrumentation. She is currently a member of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO).

Bryant has led the team that developed new optical imaging fibre bundles (hexabundles) for the SAMI instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This new technology has enabled the largest integral field spectroscopy survey of nearby galaxies.

She has served on a number of committees including the Anglo-Australian Telescope Users committee (AAOUC, from mid 2009-2012) and School of Physics colloquium committee (Sept 2007 - present).

Research interests

Her research interests are in both galaxy evolution and astrophotonics:
  • High redshift radio galaxies: Infrared imaging of ultra-steep spectrum radio sources to find high redshift galaxy candidates.
  • Circumnuclear environment of radio galaxies: Dynamics and interactions in elliptical galaxies and the triggering of radio activity.
  • Unified models of active galaxies: diagnostics of starburst and AGN processes using optical and infrared spectroscopy.
  • The impact of environment in the evolution of galaxies.
  • Using the SAMI galaxy survey, she is studying the nearby AGN population and kinematic disturbance as a function of galaxy environment.
  • Astrophotonics: developing astrophotonic devices for future astronomical instruments, in both the optical and infrared. In particular imaging fibre bundles called hexabundles.
