Biographical details

Maria is currently an ARC Future Fellow in the EarthByte Group, School of Geosciences. Her Fellowship is on the tectonic effect of oceanic gateways on Cenozoic climate. Maria was awarded her PhD from the University of Sydney in 2005 and was awarded a 4-year Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2009 on a coupled plate kinematic-mantle convection modelling project . In 2012 she was Chief Scientist on board the RV Southern Surveyor to the eastern Coral Sea. In 2014, Maria was awarded the Dorothy Hill Award from the Australian Academy of Sciences.

Research interests

Maria's research interests are in the field of marine geophysics and geodynamics, in particular examining the links between plate tectonic and mantle processes. She is also interested in the kinematic controls on subduction and back-arc basin formation and the relationship between tectonics and palaeo-climate.

Current projects

Maria works on a variety of plate tectonics projects. Her current research focus is related to her Future Fellowship on the tectonic effect of oceanic gateways on palaeoclimate. There are numerous student opportunities at both the honours and postgraduate level related to this topic. Interested students should contact Maria directly.
