Biographical details

Dr. Pelusi's research has spanned both physics and engineering in the fields of nonlinear optics, signal processing and high-speed optical communications. He has held positions in both academia and industry, at world leading overseas laboratories in the USA and Japan. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, Dr. Pelusi was a Research Fellow from 1997-2001 at the Femtosecond Technology Research Association, Tsukuba, Japan, where he investigated novel techniques for terabit communications involving the generation and transmission of ultra-short pulses in optical fibre. From 2001-2003, he was a Senior Hardware Engineer at Corvis Corporation, Maryland, U.S.A. where he developed next generation optical communication systems using advanced data modulation and signal processing techniques. Dr. Pelusi holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1998, and he has authored or co-authored over 60 journal publications. He has also authored a book chapter and holds several patents. Dr. Pelusi is a reviewer for the leading journal publications in optical communications, and he has served on the technical program committees of numerous international conferences (ACOFT 2007, MWP 2008, OECC 2008, CLEO-PR 2011, COIN 2011, COIN 2012, and OECC 2013), and he is the program co-chair of OECC 2014.

Research interests

Mark Pelusi is an ARC Future Fellow and CUDOS Associate Investigator and manager of the CUDOS Terabit per second flagship project, with a focus on developing low-power signal processors with multi-Tb/s bandwidth for extending the capacity of new-generation optical networks and overcoming the nonlinear barriers to high-data capacity communications. Since joining the School of Physics at the University of Sydney in 2005, Dr. Pelusi has played a leading role in the research of high-speed, all-optical signal processing, as well as the development of a state of the art optical communication test-bed, including its major upgrade through a successful ARC LIEF grant "100 Gbit to 1 Terabit per second optical communication test-bed facility". The multi-million dollar laboratory infrastructure is a cornerstone of the CUDOS program in Terabit per second optical communications.
