Research interests

My research is mostly in solar astrophysics (the physics of events at the Sun). Specific research interests include solar flares and solar activity, the statistics of that activity, coronal magnetic fields, solar-terrestrial relations, and Bayesian probability. I have worked on the problem of modelling magnetic fields in the Sun's corona using nonlinear force-free fields.

Current projects

Research projects are available for students at Third Year, Honours and Ph.D. levels. Current projects headings are listed below; for full details please see this page. I encourage students to participate in all aspects of research, including identifying a project. The goal is to locate a question that you find interesting.

A number of current PhD projects involve joint supervision with Stephen Hardy at NICTA, Australia's Information Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence. In these cases NICTA may contribute a top-up to a student's PhD scholarship (see this page for details).
