Biographical details

Professor Neville Weber graduated with a PhD from the University of Sydney in 1981. He has spent most of his career at the University of Sydney and has held visiting positions at the University of Cambridge, University of Michigan, University of British Columbia and University of Ottawa. Chartered Statistician (C.Stat.) status was approved by the Royal Statistical Society in 1995 and Accredited Statistician (A.Stat.) status approved by the Statistical Society of Australia Inc in 1998.

He has been Head of School since 2010 and was previously Deputy Head of School 2004-2007. He held the position of Associate Dean (Postgraduate Research) in the Faculty of Science 2004-2009. In 2011-12 he was Chair of the Australian Council of Heads of Mathematical Sciences.

In 2001 the Statistical Society of Australia Inc awarded Neville Weber Honorary Life Membership for his service to the professional organisation at both the national and NSW branch level where he had been active since he was a postgraduate student. He was National Secretary 1994-2000.

Editorial duties have included Associate Editor for the Bulletin of the Australian Mathematical Society, 1985 - 2003; Associate Editor for the Australian Journal of Statistics, 1989 - 1994; Associate Editor for the International Statistical Review, 2004 - 2009; Associate Editor for the Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics since 2013.

He has had a long connection with secondary mathematics syllabus committees, Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations and NSW HSC standard setting operations. Key roles include ACARA Advisory Board for the National Curriculum in Mathematics; Chair of the NSW HSC Mathematics Examination Committee 1998-99; Senior Judge for Mathematics for the first HSC standard setting operation; Supervisor of Marking for HSC Mathematics 2002 -2007. He has been a member of the NSW Board of Studies Consultative Committee, a panel of experts on scaling and educational measurement, since 2007.

He has also been a member of the Technical Committee on Scaling that oversees the production of the index (UAI or ATAR) used for university admissions for NSW since 1999. He has been Chair of the Committee since 2009.
