Thesis title: Anion Binding Receptors

Thesis abstract:

Sulfate is integral in many aqueous based biological and chemical processes as well as a major contaminant in environmental and industrial systems. Therefore, developing a receptor for sulfate could have great potential use in numerous areas of study. Due to the high solvation energy of sulfate in water (ΔG = -1090 kJ mol-1) binding to sulfate in aqueous systems is very challenging, as a receptor needs to overcome the strong sulfate-water interactions to be effective. Previous studies have shown that the squaramide moiety exhibits strong affinity and selectivity for sulfate, however, they also exhibit low solubility in aqueous media. Utilising triethylene glycol moieties, to increase the solubility of squaramide based receptors, the effectiveness of the squaramide moiety to bind to sulfate in aqueous media can be investigated. This will allow us to optimise the receptor-sulfate interactions which will lead to more effective receptors for sulfate in aqueous media.
