Biographical details

I have used my skills in microscopy and cell biology to develop my research in eukaryotic microbial biology and to address questions that relate to microbial interaction, growth responses and pathogenicity. My research centres on developing a clearer understanding of the ecological significance of eukaryotic microbes. Research in this field is expanding as more is understood about the significance of these organisms in terms of biosecurity, bioremediation and bioregulation. I work in close collaboration with national and international researchers with different research expertise. A number of collaborative publications have resulted, lifting the profile of eukaryotic microbe research. I have also developed novel quantitative techniques using my transferable skills set. The results have been published in journals and presented at international conferences.

My interest in biology education research is an integral part of the reflective process that I apply to my teaching. Funded research projects, based on the Human Biology curriculum changes, have resulted in six peer-reviewed publications, three international conference presentations and four invited University showcase events.

Research interests

I am interested in understanding the microbial composition and interaction in the environment. Our group focuses mainly on soil and aquatic environments. We are particularly interested in understanding how eukaryotic microbes respond to changes in their environments and how these changes impact on the trophic links of that environment. The projects involve collaborations with national and international researchers with complementary expertise in these areas.

In the soil, we are particularly interested in understanding how filamentous and zoosporic fungi grow in soil under different soil conditions. Our group has developed a new technique for quantifying fungal growth in three dimensions using computer-aided tomography. We are keen to develop this approach by applying this technique to other biological specimens.

In the aquatic environment, we have an number of interests which include developing a predictive model for cyanobacteria blooms, understanding the distribution of potential parasites and their impact on native freshwater fish and understanding the pathogenicity of isolated microbes.

Honours

People interested in completing an honours project are also welcome. The honours degree at The School of Biological Sciences consists of a research thesis written as a scientific paper (80%) and coursework (20%) comprising an experimental design course, writing a formal research proposal for your project, and a written paper criticism. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas, but if you would like some suggestions in your broad interest area, send Osu an email. A prerequisite to enrol in hounours is a WAM or equivalent undergraduate average of >70%.

Postgraduate (PhD, MSc)

A prerequisite for a postgraduate candidature is a scholarship that covers living allowance in the case of Australian students, but also tuition fees for international students.

For Australian students, there are the Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA), as well as University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA), and Faculty of Science Postgraduate Awards - the Research Office has more information about these scholarships.

Current projects

Soil

  1. Three-dimensional modelling of filamentous and zoosporic fungal growth under different growth conditions.
  2. A study of the ultrastructure, growth and colony formation of isolated species of zoosporic fungi which are also known as chytrids.

Aquatic

  1. Developing predictive models of cyanobacterial blooms using biotic and abiotic parameters.
  2. Investigating the presence and distribution of internationally identified microbial parasites in the Australian environment.
  3. Study the pathogenicity of microbial parasites on early stages of the life cycle of native aquatic species.
