Research interests

Research in the Reeves group is in two overlapping areas., and much of the work involves collaborations.

1. Evolutionary processes in bacteria

To unravel the dynamics of evolution by analysing sequences of sets of closely related strains, selected to allow determination of rates or the nature of evolutionary change. Evolution is not a steady process and for bacteria the details of population change can only be seen in case studies.

Example 1 involved obtaining genome sequences of 14 isolates of an E. coli clone that had been present in members of a family over a period of 3 years. We could show that mutations accumulated at an average rate of 2 per year, and that spread between the human members was mostly via the pet dog.

Example 2 is an ongoing program on V. cholerae to determine the details of mutation, recombination and gain and loss of bacteriophage and other mobile elements during the evolution of the 7th pandemic

2. Bacterial surface polysaccharides - Diversity and synthesis

Bacteria have an enormous range of surface polysaccharides – commonly 50-200 forms for a species, generating antigenic diversity which is known to be important in may ways, including interactions with the host for both commensals and pathogens.

The Reeves group is one of an international team that have sequenced the relevant genes for different serotypes for several sets including E. coli. Shigella and Salmonella, relating gene functions to the polysaccharide structure. A major aim is to better understand the evolution of this diversity.
