Biographical details

I am originally from the UK but have lived in Australia since 2005 and very much call Sydney home. I have BSc in Biological Sciences where my honours project focused on the spatial arrangement of leaf mining insects on rare plants. I followed this up with a brief foray into high school teaching (maths and biology) but returned to science in 1993 to do a Ph.D. at the University of Southampton. My research there was directed at understanding interactions between feeding herbivores, changes in host-plant chemistry and responses of the next trophic level -the insects that fed upon the herbivores. This was a very successful project, leading to 4 publications and a lifetime aversion to cabbage.

The arrival of Prof Hawkins at the University of Southampton enabled me to switch systems and examine how the distribution of limpet grazers on the rocky intertidal affected their chances of being eaten by birds. Somehow, this is translated into a career obsession with trying to understand why limpets are arranged in space in the way they are.

An appointment to the academic staff at the University of Plymouth in 1999 allowed me to diversify his research interests into many different aspects of marine ecology, including evaluating the U.K.'s first ever statutory No-Take Marine reserve for conservation (see Hoskin et al 2011, Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci and Coleman et al. 2013 J. Exp. Mar. Bio. & Ecol.). He also supervised > 15 Ph.D., > 15 Masters and > 45 honours students in a wide variety of projects, many of which have been successfully published.

An opportunity afforded by a Royal Society International Fellowship, meant a research visit to Sydney which as well as yielding a good publication, also led to a long-standing friendship with Professors Tony Underwood and Gee Chapman at the University of Sydney.

In 2005, I moved to the University of Sydney to take over from Tony and Gee in running the Centre for Research on Ecological Impacts of Coastal Cities upon their retirement. The Centre has now become the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems group (CMEg).

Research interests

Whilst I supervise many projects in marine ecology, I have 3 main interests:

  1. What controls the arrangment and intensity of grazing in rocky shore systems?
  2. Predator-prey interactions, particularly behavioural, on rocky shores
  3. The impacts of human activities (e.g. pollution, buildings, seawalls) on coastal environments and how best to measure them.

For Graduate Research Students, I believe that my role is to facilliate and support your research. That means developing a project question that we both understand and can work on. So the best thing to do is talk to me about your research ideas.
