Biographical details

Associate Professor Samir Samman is a lecturer and researcher in Human Nutrition in the School of Molecular Bioscience. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow in Clinical Biochemistry at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. He supervises research higher degree students (PhD and MSc) and teaches Nutritional Science to undergraduate students, mainly in the BSc(Nutrition) and postgraduate students in the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Associate Professor Samman is the Editor for the Nutrition Society of Australia (2003-), member of the Editorial Board of Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research (2002-) and the Journal of Complementary Medicine (2003-). He served as an Associate Editor of Nutrition & Dietetics (1998-2004). He is a reviewer for a number of national and international journals and for granting agencies. Associate Professor Samman authored the substantiation for a health claim for sodium and hypertension (FSANZ) and served as an expert reviewer for the current set of Nutrient Reference Values (NH&MRC). He is a member of the Nutrition Society (UK), American Society of Nutrition and the Australian Atherosclerosis Society. He is an active member of the Nutrition Society of Australia and in 2003 was awarded an Honorary Life Membership.

Research interests

Associate Professor Samman has research interests in human nutrition and health with research projects in the areas of diet and heart disease, and nutrient requirements. Other research interests include nutraceuticals and environmental nutrition.

Nutrient requirements: research projects have focussed on determining nutrient requirements for optimal health. Clinical trials have been undertaken mainly on zinc to assess the upper limit of intake (UL) and interactions that affect absorption and nutritional status. Other nutrients of interest include vitamin B12 and folate. Diet and heart disease: research has been undertaken on the impact of a variety of nutrients and phytochemicals on plasma lipids and antioxidant activity. We were the first to show in humans that dietary trans fatty acids increase cholesteryl ester transfer activity and this may be the key mechanism by which trans fats increase the risk of heart disease. Other research interests include omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens.
