Biographical details

Siobhan is an interdisciplinary, veterinarian-researcher and public health epidemiologist with major interests in cryptosporidiosis and other globally important diseases that spread between animals and humans (zoonoses).

Following her veterinary training at the University of Sydney, Siobhan relocated to the United States where she completed a PhD in infectious disease epidemiology at Tufts University in Grafton, MA. During this time she completed field work in Uganda where she caught the "Africa bug." She also completed an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Water: Systems, Science and Society whilst pursuing her doctoral studies at Tufts.

Between 2009-2011 Siobhan held an academic appointment with the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. At that stage she had every intention of pursuing a career in global public health. However a stint as global health advisor for a project affiliated with USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats program brought her back to her veterinary origins.

She returned to the University of Sydney to assume her current role in 2012. Since then she has completed a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) and become a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in veterinary epidemiology.

Research interests

Siobhan's current research focusses on three main areas:

  • Zoonoses at the human-animal interface, including surveillance and response to emerging zoonoses and education of health professionals regarding the same;
  • Agriculture for nutrition and health, in particular the role of animal source foods and livestock production in human nutrition and health;
  • Cryptosporidisois in humans, in particular the clinical epidemiology and transmission potential of respiratory cryptosporidiosis

Teaching and supervision

  • Epidemiology and evidence-based practice;
  • Food safety and zoonoses;
  • One Health
