Bio: Mike Smith obtained his BCom/BSc (2005-2008), BSc(Hons) (2009), and PhD (Applied Mathematics) (2010-2013) from The University of Auckland, New Zealand. The research undertaken at Auckland focused primarily on the modelling of thin, elastic plates, and was applied to various problems from the modelling of floating sea ice to the study of platonic crystals. Before moving to Sydney, he worked at the Institute Fresnel at Aix-Marseille Universite in Marseille, France (2013-2014), where he worked on the high-frequency homogenization of multiphase anisotropic media and metamaterials. He is now a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Physics at the University of Sydney where his current work is on metamaterials theory and computational modelling.
