Thin Film Materials

Thin films have many applications in the microelectronics, optics and the modification of surfaces. The highly controllable way in which thin films can be synthesized makes them ideal for investigating the structure and properties of new materials while the possibility of controlling the energy of depositing species and the deposition surface temperature means that new phases including metastable phases can be synthesized.

We are currently exploring the synthesis and structure property relationships for the MAX phases; transparent conducting oxides and carbon in this way.
