Science Teachers' Workshops
A Big Year
The 15th Science Teachers Workshop 2012.
November 5 and 6
The workshop will be focusing on the extremely busy 12-18 months that Physics has had. With things like a Nobel Prizes in Astrophysics and Quantum Optics, Quantum simulator, transit of Venus, Curiosity on Mars, the Higgs boson, new classification of Black holes, Photonics chip, The Square Kilometer Array, extra solar planets. We have really had a smashing year.
The workshop will cover modules in the syllabus, discussions of National Curriculum, careers information and some fantastic speakers, who are all pumped up about the big year.

Past Physics Science Teachers' Workshops
Since 1984 the Science Foundation for Physics and the School of Physics have hosted a two-day in-service training workshop for physics teachers in NSW and the ACT. Held every two years at the University of Sydney, up to 140 science teachers enjoy a packed program of inspiring talks and lectures and a choice of hands-on workshops covering a wide aspect of teaching practices, ideas for class activities and discussion groups.
In recent years the STW's have focussed on the new physics syllabus in NSW, with sessions allowing teachers and physicists to discuss and debate the more challenging aspects of the new syllabus document. The workshops allow teachers to encounter cutting-edge physics research, to hone their skills through sessions concentrating on practical demonstrations of physics concepts, and to share resources and strategies for the physics classroom.
In 2010 the Science Teachers Workshop was a Faculty-wide program, held in November, with workshops also being offered in Agriculture, Biology and Chemistry. The two-day Physics program included plenary lectures featuring cutting edge research followed by a choice of workshops (two each day) from up to 12 workshop options. On the first afternoon a "Meet-a-Physicist" session was held, followed by an informal dinner. In 2010 the Physics STW was accredited by the NSW Teachers Institute for 14 professional learning hours.
