The Gambling Treatment Clinic was founded in 1999 by Associate Professor Michael Walker (2009†); Michael was a recognised international expert in the field of problem gambling and had written one of the early major reference books on the topic. In 2010, Professor Alex Blaszczynski assumed the Directorship of the Clinic.

Professor Alex Blaszczynski is a researcher and clinical psychologist with a long history of involvement in treatment and clinical research of a range of impulse control disorders, in particular pathological gambling. He has published extensively on the topic of gambling, carried out randomised treatment outcomes studies using behavioural interventions, assessed the prevalence of depression and suicidality, the relationship between crime, gambling, and personality characteristics of impulsivity and sensation-seeking in pathological gamblers. Professor Blaszczynski is an internationally renowned expert in the field of gambling treatment and research and the recipient of several awards in recognition of his contributions to research in this field.

The Gambling Treatment Clinic is funded by a grant from the Responsible Gaming Fund (RGF), a branch of the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing in the NSW State Government. These gambling treatment services are provided free of charge to individuals with gambling problems and their families.
