Enhancing Australian Science and Mathematics education
CAUT Grants in Psychology 1994
The small group (tutorial, seminar, workshop) is an extremely valuable vehicle
for learning, both at University and in the workplace, but small group teaching
is very demanding, requiring sophisticated group facilitation skills. The
project will have two major goals: (1) to facilitate group learning skills
among approximately 200 first year Social Science students; and (2) enhancing
the small group teaching skills of a group of 12 social science part-time
tutors and senior staff, by the process of sharing insights and experiences,
classroom observations and shared reflections on teaching practice. The
project will help overcome an urgent identified need; to improve the quality of
group learning and teaching at Curtin and other Australian universities.

Computer-based learning modules will be implemented in a second-year
undergraduate psychology course. The impact of this method for students'
understanding, approach to learning, and evaluation of teaching will be
assessed. It is hoped that the use of modern technology in the teaching of
psychology will enhance student's interaction with the course content as well
as freeing human teaching resources for more problem-based tasks. This project
will allow these benefits to be objectively assessed, and will determine future
use of computer resources in the Psychology program of Newcastle.
