Trevor Finlayson and Don Hutton
Physics Department
Monash UniversityAbstract
For three years now our students have all participated in a unit of work aimed at giving them an appreciation and understanding of the role of physicists in and the value of physics to society. As well we aim to increase our students' awareness of physics related careers, and their suitability for such careers and to help them prepare to win their first job.
Topics covered include: The responsibilities of the physicists, The physics profession - role of the AIP, Innovation and technological development, Self awareness and decision making, Job search and application.
All students visit an appropriate workplace to study professional physicists at work and also prepare a real job application with the help of career guidance professionals. The unit is now welcomed both by our staff and students as a valuable component in the education of the physics student soon to be employed.
