Abstract

Participation in schooling is often analysed by looking at raw enrolments. This approach does not take into account changes in enrolments due to variation in the birth rate and also in the retention rate. This article uses a statistical measure that eliminates these variations. The measure used is the "Percentage of Year 7 students who do Physics when they get to Year 12". This gives the apparent retention rate for Physics.

The article will look at the change in this value over time, across the states and between the genders. These changes can possibly be used to identify successful strategies in attracting students to Physics.
